Rug Image Guidelines for Beginners:
Small 16”x16” frame - final rug size is 12”x12”
Medium 20”x20” frame - final rug size is 16”x16”
Large 24”x24” frame - final rug size is 20”x20”
Keep it simple
Simple images with strong outlines and solid colours work the best for beginners. Consider your final rug size when choosing your image. Larger rugs will have more room to have details.
No Intricate or detailed designs
Highly detailed images with fine elements, patterns or shading can get lost in the tufting process. Choose images with large, well defined areas.
Avoid photographs or watercolour images
Photographs, watercolour painting or images with soft shading do not translate well into a tufted rug. Tufting uses individual strands of yarn, blending colours like in a painting isn’t possible. Stick to bold flat colours with no gradients or shading effects.
Text
Text should be a minimum of 4”. Large, bold, chunky, simple fonts work the best.
For example:
16”x16” frame - font should be a third of the canvas.
24”x24” frame - font should be a fifth of the canvas.
Use Front-facing images only
Side angles, perspective views or complex 3D images can be difficult to tuft accurately. For best outcome, use an image that is front-facing and has clear, flat shapes
Using AI Prompts:
“Create a vectorized image and keep it simple”
“Create a cartoon character with this image and use only solid colours”
You may need to try several times to get an image that will work well with tufting.
